Learn Korean Slang Naturally with Variety Shows in the K-Slang Category

This post introduces the structure of the K-Slang category on the Korea Compass blog (koreacompass.com). It offers practical guidance on how to use this content effectively to enhance your Korean language learning journey.

Each post includes short clips, mostly taken from popular Korean variety shows. Initially, I planned to focus on Korean slang, especially insults, curse words, and colloquial expressions. However, I had second thoughts: Is it okay to start learning a language with profanity? Plus, I must consider that some of our readers may be underage.

I've gradually shifted the focus to a broader introduction of Korean variety shows themselves.
Still, it's natural for language learners to be curious about slang. After all, it's an essential part of everyday speech.

Currently, most of my clips originate from SNL Korea, renowned for its sharp comedy sketches. But I’m planning to feature other well-known Korean shows as well.

 

2. Dialogue

As in our K-Drama Bites series, I translate selected dialogues from each clip. Understanding conversational Korean starts with mastering the basics—and that includes the vocabulary and phrasing used in everyday conversation.

To help you grasp the deeper meaning of a line beyond a direct translation, I include special commentary marked with a 🐾 emoji. Don't skip it—it often explains nuances or cultural context that are easy to miss.

Some learners try to memorize entire sentences or scripts, which can be helpful. But if you ask me, vocabulary is the cornerstone of language learning.

That's why every post includes a Key Takeaways section—a focused list of essential Korean words and phrases pulled from the clip. Whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced learner, I highly recommend reviewing this section closely.

 

4. Meet the Characters

Since my clips usually feature well-known Korean hosts, comedians, actors, or singers, I also provide brief introductions to these personalities.

I strive to avoid duplication and ensure that no critical information is omitted. However, with the increasing number of entries, some overlap or omissions may occur. I hope you’ll understand if that happens from time to time.

 

5. Introduction to the Show

Among Korean media, variety shows can be the hardest for non-Koreans to understand. Without knowing Korean culture or daily life, it’s often unclear why people are laughing or what certain situations imply.
